Animal husbandry is defined by merriam-webster as "a branch of agriculture concerned with the production and care of domestic animals." It is so much more than that. What we do is a responsibility that we choose to accept, to care for these animals in the best way that we can. They rely on us for their basic needs and for the love and attention that they deserve. Sometimes we win the many battles and sometimes we fail, but when one of my mamas trusts me enough to seek me out and lie in my lap when she is giving birth, it is a humbling and amazing moment. These are the rewards.
So friends, come on into my office! Sit and stay a while. You will feel the weight of the world fall from your shoulders... I promise!
As a child, I always loved animals and the outdoors and I wanted to be a veterinarian. As an adult, it became very important to me to know my food sources and to grow as much myself as I could for our family. So when we were settled, the first thing we did was plant a large garden and then the cute little fluffy chicks began to arrive. After you have tasted fresh vegetables that you have grown yourself and eaten fresh eggs from your very own chickens, there is no going back my friends!
The livestock began to arrive soon after the chickens much to the dismay of some of my family and friends who didn't understand my desire to add more work and commitment to an already busy life. There will always be people that look at your life from the outside and shake their heads and that's ok! This life is fulfilling in so many more ways than I can articulate. My animals bring me peace and unconditional love. Yes there is heartache and frustration, hard work and lots of dirt and poop! At the end of the day, I want to live as much as I can in the days that I have and do the best I can because we don't get any do-overs!
We are planning and plotting many exciting things for 2021! Thank you for coming along with us on our journey!
